After a mock ceremony in December, 2nd Lieutenant Samantha Sargent has officially commissioned this month
in the Air Force. She will serve as a Nuclear and Missile Operations officer at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. Congratulations, Lieutenant! As Holm Center Commander, General Maher leads all Air Force ROTC host detachments at 145 colleges and universities, with cadets at more than 1,050 respective cross-town schools; Officer Training School; and 885 Air Force Junior ROTC units at high schools around the world. The Holm Center produces more than 85 percent of the Air Force’s active duty, Guard and Reserve line officers, judge advocates, chaplains and medical officers. Brigadier General Leslie Maher, Holm Center Commander, came to visit Detachment 10 on 19 March. She met with Dr. Stuart Bell, The University of Alabama President, for a courtesy visit. Dr. Bell also shared with General Maher his proud collection of Alabama championship footballs! General Maher also made a few cadet and cadre presentations to recognize their superior work and performance at Detachment 10:

Something unique about myself: I have a twin brother. Favorite thing about being in AFROTC: The people. The friends that I’ve made through AFROTC are some of the best people I know. I hope to have them in my life for a long time. Most challenging part of being in AFROTC: Balancing student life, cadet life, and a social life. What leadership opportunities have you been given as a cadet in AFROTC?: I have been given multiple opportunities to lead my flight and squadron at PT and LLAB. I hope to get more opportunities to lead in the future. What advice would you give a student thinking about becoming a cadet?: Reach out to someone serving in the Air Force/in AFROTC and ask them about their experiences or any questions you may have. You’ll feel much more prepared to start your journey with the world’s greatest Air Force. Det/CC: Cadet DeWald is a highly motivated cadet with a strong desire to develop language skills, and has recently been accepted to the Project Global Officer Program to learn Korean.. She has demonstrated a lot of potential in becoming a good future military officer and I am confident she will continue to work hard to achieve her goals! Project Global Officer (GO) is an initiative of the Defense Language and National Security Education Office (DLNSEO), administered by the Institute of International Education to promote critical language and study abroad opportunities to ROTC students. The U.S. military needs future military officers who possess the necessary critical language and cross-cultural communication skills required for effective leadership in the 21st-century operational environment. Project GO Scholars study the following critical languages in domestic and overseas programs: Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu. Something unique about myself: I've been to 18 countries. Favorite thing about being in AFROTC: The friendships made during my time in ROTC along with the opportunity to grow my leadership skills over my four years in the program. Most challenging part of being in AFROTC: Balancing the ROTC workload along with full-time engineering coursework and a part-time job throughout all of college. What leadership opportunities have you been given as a cadet in AFROTC?: I held detachment level positions such as Wing Inspector General, AS200 Flight Commander, and Deputy Operations Commander. What advice would you give a student thinking about becoming a cadet?: Enjoy your time in the program, pay attention to your deadlines and take advantage of every opportunity available. |
